Chapter 2 · Verse 68

Sankhya Yoga

सांख्ययोग

तस्माद्यस्य महाबाहो निगृहीतानि सर्वशः | इन्द्रियाणीन्द्रियार्थेभ्यस्तस्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठिता ||२-६८||

tasmādyasya mahābāho nigṛhītāni sarvaśaḥ . indriyāṇīndriyārthebhyastasya prajñā pratiṣṭhitā ||2-68||

In plain words

You must completely withdraw your senses from their worldly objects to secure your wisdom. When you master your desires, your mind stops wandering wildly and becomes steady. This self-control frees you from the binding cycle of karma, or action and reaction, allowing your spiritual understanding to remain firmly established and unshakable.

Translation

2.68 Therefore, O mighty-armed, he whose senses are restrained from going after their objects on all sides, his wisdom is firmly set.

Meaning

When the senses are completely controlled the mind cannot wander wildly in the sensual grooves. It becomes steady like the lamp in a windless place. The Yogi is now established in the Self and his knowledge is steady. (Cf. III.7).
